When I am up a hill, in the wind, and it begins to rain. I either relax, and let the painting take on some new marks or I can try and get the canvas away from the elements as quickly as possible. It's a fine balance.

This painting though I began to paint in such low temperatures that the rabbit glue wouldn't even do its priming job. I started off determined, and finished even more determined. But, my fingers couldn't work the nails out of the old hutch I'd nailed the canvas to. In the end, I turned in and left the canvas behind with the wind howling in my ears.

The next morning, far from a ruined painting, I found it brushed with salt crystals from the sea haar.
